PICTURES FROM ALASKA...
Spring breakup at Portage Glacier, about an hour's drive south of Anchorage. The glacier has been retreating for years, and in this photo only a part of it can be seen snaking down the canyon on the right. Large chunks of ice break from the face and mix with the melting ice water that covers the lake all summer.
